Welcome to Decoding Democracy

Educational Mission

Decoding Democracy is a project designed to educate students about civic engagement and demonstrate how participation in democracy can begin long before they are old enough to vote. The project consists of two components: (1) this website and (2) an interactive workshop designed for middle school and early high school classrooms. Through these resources, students learn practical ways to engage with their communities, understand democratic institutions, and recognize their role as active citizens.

About Decoding Democracy

The website features a Citizenship Challenge that tests students' civic knowledge, a Discover Your Civic Path quiz that helps students identify their preferred style of civic engagement, and a Find Your Cause activity that connects students with issues they care about and ways to get involved in their communities.

The website also includes an interview series on the American political and legal systems, covering topics such as elections, criminal justice, immigration, education, and local politics. Using these activities and insights from the interviews, I developed a Civics in Action Workshop that culminates in students writing letters to community members, helping them see that their voices matter and encouraging them to take an active role in their communities.
